DeltaSphere
3D Scanner Captures Staged Murder for Model Reconstruction
CHAPEL
HILL, N.C.,
July 22, 2002 – Visitors
to the 3rdTech booth at SIGGRAPH 2002 will be able to walk around in a
double murder crime scene. The staged murder scene was accurately captured, with
full color, by 3rdTech’s DeltaSphere-3000 3D Laser Scene Digitizer. Walking
around the scene is accomplished with 3rdTech’s HiBall-3000 Wide Area Tracker.
The
DeltaSphere-3000 3D Scene Digitizer is a portable, fast and accurate 3D Scanner
designed for digitizing ‘room-sized’ spaces and objects. This makes it well
suited for crime and accident scene capture and reconstruction. Instead of
sending teams of law enforcement officers to make hundreds of manual
measurements taking many hours or days, the DeltaSphere-3D Scanner can capture
millions of measurements in just 20 minutes. Multiple, detailed scans of a room
can be made in an hour or two enabling the measurement of objects and the
distance between any two points. In addition, the data can be used to fully
reconstruct a model of the crime scene for both investigation and use in the
courtroom.
The murder
scene shown at SIGGRAPH will also demonstrate the realistic color captured with
the DeltaSphere-3000 Scanner. Amazingly realistic models, in some cases
indistinguishable from video of the scene, can be displayed from any viewpoint.
The model being shown at SIGGRAPH was developed from the DeltaSphere’s data
using the powerful PolyWorks application from InnovMetric Software (www.innovmetric.com).
